Type System

Playfair Display handles display typography, including headlines and italic subheads. Newsreader is the long-form reading face. Instrument Sans is used for interface labels, metadata, and navigation. Josefin Sans gives the site title its light, uppercase accent. Source Code Pro is reserved for code.

Technology

The site is built with Astro and custom CSS, deployed on Cloudflare Pages. Fonts are served through Google Fonts. Content is written in markdown with Astro content collections and generated as static pages.

Design Philosophy

The visual direction is editorial minimalism: warm neutrals, disciplined hierarchy, and generous whitespace so the writing stays central. Motion is subtle and optional, with accessibility and readability taking priority over decoration.

In dark mode, a faint amber glow drifts along the right edge of the page — a candle flickering just out of frame. It responds to your scroll position, growing slightly warmer as you read deeper. The effect is purely atmospheric: it reinforces the warmth of the palette without drawing attention to itself.
